The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, Knoxville (UTHSC COM-Knoxville) Internal Medicine Residency Program is a close-knit, academically rigorous program committed to developing exceptional physicians. Our residents, faculty, and staff share a common mission: to deliver outstanding patient care, advance medical knowledge through research and inquiry, and improve the quality of healthcare for the patients and communities we serve.
With a total program size of 36 residents and a low resident-to-faculty ratio, our program provides an environment where residents can build meaningful, longitudinal relationships with dedicated general medicine and subspecialty faculty. These relationships foster individualized mentorship, frequent feedback, and a strong sense of belonging throughout residency.
“Small but intense.” Residents and students alike have used this phrase to describe our program - capturing our commitment to rigorous clinical training while maintaining the personal attention and collegial culture that define the Knoxville experience.

The University of Tennessee Medical Center is the primary tertiary care training environment for our residents and has a longstanding commitment to medical education. Since 1956, the medical center has trained thousands of medical students and resident physicians through its growing residency and fellowship programs.
Residents benefit from exposure to a broad spectrum of clinical medicine, including complex tertiary care, advanced technology, and a wide range of specialty services. This high-acuity environment is complemented by an outstanding primary care network, providing residents with a comprehensive view of patient care across the continuum.
The Department of Medicine offers a broad academic and clinical environment designed to support comprehensive internal medicine training. Fellowship programs include:
The program includes 13 categorical Internal Medicine residents per year, in addition to a Transitional Program residency with 6 residents per year. This structure creates opportunities for residents to learn alongside a diverse group of physicians while maintaining the close faculty relationships that are central to our program.
Our program is deeply connected to the health of Knoxville and the broader East Tennessee region. The direct patient care provided by our department and by the physicians who trained here and continue to practice throughout the region is essential to the health of our communities.
The majority of UTHSC COM-Knoxville graduates choose to make Knoxville and East Tennessee their home, continuing a tradition of investing in the health and future of the region.
