OB/GYN Hospitalist Fellowship

Program Overview

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Medicine - Knoxville (UTHSC COM-Knoxville) is proud to offer a one-year Fellowship in OBGYN Hospitalist Medicine. Our department strongly believes that in the future all academic hospitals/OBGYN residency programs will have academic hospitalists and that it is an important option to make available to learners. The goal of this program is to train a fellow who will go on to become a leader in academic OBGYN Hospitalist Medicine. The fellow will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical situations, as well as to the quality and safety metrics of hospital medicine. The fellow will gain experience in being the physician team lead while mastering the art of teamwork and teaching.

This fellowship is designed to provide high-quality, advanced education in hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology focused on maximizing patient safety. It provides a strong blend of clinical, surgical, and healthcare systems training in an academic hospital setting. We understand that Academic Hospitalist Fellows will likely be active candidates for specialty board certification and plan the curriculum to allow fellows to continue to work towards this goal. As Academic Hospitalists, a relatively new subspecialty, we do not want to close any doors for our fellows and aim to have them continue to gain experience that will enhance all specialty knowledge and skills.

With more than 5,000 deliveries annually and outpatient offices in surrounding counties, our program provides learning opportunities in management of both medical and surgical complications of pregnancy, urgent gynecologic care, and inpatient gyn care. Fellows gain the clinical benefits of a large catchment area, all from our primary site. The volume of deliveries, along with the residency and fellowship programs, provides the opportunity for fellows to obtain robust experience in OBGYN Hospitalist care at the level of the supervising physician. The fellow will participate in labor and delivery, GYN in patient and OR care, USG education, an ICU rotation, and have opportunities for electives in Medical Ethics, Contraceptive Care, Adolescent OBGYN and more.

UTHSC COM-Knoxville is comprised of 12 residency programs and 18 subspecialty fellowship programs, pharmacy residencies, school of radiology, and over 400 full-time and volunteer teaching physicians and researchers.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology trains 20 residents through a well-rounded experience in all facets of OB/GYN education. The residency program promotes abundant clinical opportunities in obstetrics, gynecology, and the subspecialties of:

• Gynecologic Oncology
• Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
• Urogynecology
• Complex Family Planning
• Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology
• MIGS
• OB/Gyn Hospitalists
• Midwifery

Joining our three MFM fellows and 20 residents, the Hospitalist Fellow will have the opportunity to experience positive interaction between faculty and residents/fellows, and camaraderie amongst fellow and residents. Fellows enhance resident education by providing oversight and teaching for all core competencies of Specialists in OBGYN.

Center of Excellence

The Center for Women and Infants is one of the medical center’s eight Centers of Excellence. Each center provides comprehensive and collaborative care to patients. It brings together expertise in clinical care, teaching, and research. Patients receive exceptional patient-centered care, premier technology, and extensive patient/community education.
UT Medical Center is one of five designated Regional Perinatal Centers. Regional Perinatal Centers link our state via a system of high-risk maternal and infant care. We offer the highest acuity maternal care (Level IV obstetric care), high-risk transportation, and are fortunate to have a 66-bed, all private room Level III NICU.
